OSSEC / HIDS Rule 1003
- Rule family: OSSEC / HIDS
- Rule ID: 1003
- Definition status: Present in current source
- Alert message / subject: Non standard syslog message (size too large).
- Rule level: 13
- Definition checked: 2026-10-21
Interpretation and response
This rule identifies an unusually large syslog message. Investigate malfunctioning applications, excessive logging and potentially malicious input.
An OSSEC/HIDS event records or correlates activity. Blocking depends on the originating application and any separately configured Active Response policy; an alert alone does not prove that an attack was blocked.
The current definition uses a maximum-size attribute of 8192; the historical 1025-character threshold is obsolete. Compare the installed rule and manager behavior.
Documentation
The following guidance was migrated from the historical wiki and reviewed against the rule definition. Legacy ASL product names and interface instructions refer to the versions documented then.
