Interpretation and response

This event is recorded as “$(sca.policy): $(sca.check.title): Status changed from ’not applicable’ to failed”. Review the originating log and the affected host or service to determine whether the activity was expected.

An OSSEC/HIDS event records or correlates activity. Blocking depends on the originating application and any separately configured Active Response policy; an alert alone does not prove that an attack was blocked.

Description

The CIS Compliance scanner is reporting that the security control that was not applicable previously has now failed.

What you should do

This means that the CIS compliance framework previously tested the system for a component that was not installed (example: webserver) and skipped the test as “not applicable”. Since then the component has been installed, and it it is not in compliance with the framework. Investigate the endpoint and establish if the security control can or should be implemented.

False Positives

A legitimate event may still trigger this rule. Review the surrounding activity before deciding whether it is malicious.

Tuning Guidance

There is no guidance for tuning this rule, this is a generic Windows error and the rule should not be disabled.
