Interpretation and response

This event is recorded as “PHPBB Login attempt failure - invalid username”. Review the originating log and the affected host or service to determine whether the activity was expected.

Description

This rule detects when a user attempts to log into the PHPBB, and fails to authenticate properly. This is because the username is wrong.

Authentication is controlled by PHPBB, and disabling this rule will not allow the user to log in. Disabling this rule will prevent the software from both alerting when failed logins occur, and also detecting brute force attacks against PHPBB.
